Tosca Urbanus

Becoming a criminal defence lawyer was an obvious choice for Tosca Urbanus; defending others is her second nature. She exclusively defends suspects in criminal cases, such as violent crimes, organised crime and drug-related offences. Tosca Urbanus is also specialized in juvenile criminal cases and assists minors in various criminal cases. Together with Willem Jebbink, she assists convicts during their conditional release, advising people on the legality of the special conditions imposed upon them and in litigation against the State of the Netherlands. In addition to criminal law, Tosca Urbanus graduated in international criminal law and human rights; defending clients in cases where fundamental rights are at stake has her special interest.  She does not shy away from a principle argument, a view she shares with her colleagues.

Career

Tosca Urbanus studied criminal law and international crimonal law at the University of Amsterdam. From 2013 until 2015 she worked as a law clerk at the criminal court of the District Court of Amsterdam. During her studies she did an internship and worked at law firms and conducted research into the legal possibilities for reparations for war victims. Since 2015 she works as a lawyer at Jebbink Soeteman Advocaten.

From 2019 to 2022 she was part of the board of the Dutch Association of Young Criminal Lawyers (Nederlandse Vereniging van Jonge Strafrechtadvocaten, ‘NVJSA’). First as vice-chairman and in her last term as chairman. Since 2016 she has been secretary of the board of the Nuhanovic Foundation, a Dutch foundation that supports cases related to obtaining compensation/ reparations for war victims.

In 2020/21 Tosca succesfully completed Criminal Law couse at the Willem Pompe Institute for Criminal Law Sciences at Utrecht University, making her a specialist in criminal cases.
